Dune: Part Two
Even though it’s only April, “Dune: Part Two” is almost on lock to be one of the most highly anticipated films of 2024. In this sequel to his science fiction epic from 2021, director Denis Villeneuve returns to the desert planet of Arrakis.
Like any good follow-up, “Dune: Part Two” raises the bar with an engrossing story, a compelling cast of characters, and some of the most adrenaline-pumping action sequences you will see in a blockbuster this decade. It’s an excellent film.
“Dune: Part Two,” which is set immediately after its predecessor, follows Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) and his mother, Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson), as they integrate into the Fremen tribe.
Paul is also romantically involved with the tough Chani (Zendaya). However, Paul is still plagued by the wounds from his family’s devastation at the hands of the evil House Harkonnen.
He eventually has to choose between his true love and his destiny as Lisan Al Gaib, the legendary woman.
A cast that includes Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Christopher Walken, Léa Seydoux, and Stellan Skarsgård is quite impressive for “Dune: Part Two.

Immaculate
Sydney Sweeney is a rising star whose role in the comic book flop “Madame Web” was a rare blunder in her career, but “Immaculate” puts her back on track as a talent to watch.
Sweeney plays American Cecilia, who goes to Rome to assume her vows at a distant convent in the isolated Italian countryside, in this spine-tingling nightmare.
But after settling into the nunnery, she learns terrible secrets, and what begins as a spiritual adventure soon turns into a nightmare when the convent’s sinister intentions for her are made clear.
I will keep this brief to prevent unintentionally giving away any plot points because “Immaculate” is one of those films that is best enjoyed knowing as little as possible before viewing.
Let me simply state that “Immaculate” is without a doubt one of the biggest surprises I’ve seen this year. Not only is Sweeney outstanding in the title part, but the narrative also takes some quite surprising and extreme turns.
Before you watch, please note that this movie is not appropriate for those with sensitive souls. But it’s absolutely essential to watch if you can handle blood.

Late Night with the Devil
In relation to unexpectedly good horror films that came out earlier this year, “Late Night with the Devil” shows that the overused footage subgenre is still relevant.
“Late Night with the Devil,” which is cleverly structured as an episode of a 1970s late-night talk show, stars David Dastmalchian as Jack Delroy, the host of the unsuccessful chat program “Night Owls.”
Jack invites a purportedly possessed girl into his show in a desperate attempt to raise his plummeting ratings, with predictable disastrous results.
Among the most imaginatively inspired horror films of the past few years is “Late Night with the Devil.” The discussion show format is expertly handled by directors Colin and Cameron Cairnes, who also give viewers a behind-the-scenes look at what goes on between commercial breaks (smartly presented in black and white).
The terrifying film is a true display of Dastmalchian’s abilities, and it builds to a spooky climax that lingers in your mind long after the credits have rolled.

Tiger
A hidden gem in the vast Disney media library is Disneynature, the brand of the firm that produces nature films reminiscent of Walt Disney’s True-Life Adventures. There was also some doubt as to whether it would go on following Disney’s acquisition of National Geographic and the assets of 21st Century Fox.
Disneynature has, fortunately, survived. Additionally, we have a brand-new documentary to view on Earth Day, which coincides with the fifteenth anniversary of the release of the original picture, “Earth.” “Tiger” centers on Ambar, a tigress living in the forests of contemporary India with her offspring.
Though the teaser is cute, these films always deal with more significant ecological themes, such as the dangers that face forests and jungles and the melting of ice caps. “Polar Bear,” which debuted in 2022, is maybe the most depressing Disney film ever produced. (It had the feel of a first-hand narrative of the end of the world.)
Priyanka Chopra Jonas narrated “Tiger,” the first Disneynature film since 2022, which was helmed by Mark Linfield and co-directed by Rob Sullivan and Vanessa Berlowitz. Disneynature films are a source of endless happiness. Earth Day this year will be much more memorable thanks to “Tiger.” Drew Taylor

Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver
With a little thud, the first “Rebel Moon” film debuted on Netflix in December 2023. It did not leave much of an impression on the list of the top 10 most-watched films on the streaming site, and it received very negative reviews (it has an astonishing 21% rating on Rotten Tomatoes).
As a result, “Rebel Moon: Part Two: The Scargiver” is receiving a lot less attention, but it has the potential to be a surprise smash that learns from its predecessor’s mistakes (or it may be another clunker).
Once more, Kora (Sofia Boutella), a former soldier turned rebel, and her army of recruits from all around the galaxy will be at the focus of the second chapter of the “Rebel Moon” narrative as they stand up to the formidable Imperium troops.
To Kora’s dismay, her main foe, Admiral Atticus Noble (Ed Skrein), has also made a comeback. The elite fighter will have to confront her past to vanquish an opponent she believed to be dead. The “Rebel Moon” franchise boasts very good production qualities, even though its science fiction universe may be considered somewhat derivative.

The Holdovers
If you don’t have Peacock, check out the Oscar-nominated film “The Holdovers,” which is available on Prime Video this month. It’s a great movie to watch. The film, directed by Alexander Payne of “Nebraska” and “Election,” is set in 1970 during Christmas break at an all-boys boarding school.
Dominic Sessa is the only student left behind; Paul Giamatti is the strict instructor appointed to stay back with the guys who are unable to go home for the holidays; and Da’Vine gives an Oscar-winning performance. Cook Joy Randolph is mourning the death of her son. This moving character study explores the meaning of loneliness. Adam Chitwood
